What is going on at Entain?

I was at about eleven or twelve, when a teacher at school said that the stock market was "gambling". I doubt if the vast majority of us would agree with that, especially if you spend a good chunk of your time undertaking fundamental research. As for gambling, I do a little bit of it beyond the Grand National, but so little that Entain (ENT) - which owns the Ladbrokes, Coral, BetMGM, Ladbrokes Australia, TAB NZ, Eurobet, Sportingbet and 365Scores brands - will be uninterested in having me as a client. I have made decent money via Entain as it happens, but that is all to do with doubling my share position during early COVID, and being wise enough not to fully exit the shares until they were getting close to a 2000 pence share price. Gambling, eh?!

Don't get too excited about the inevitable continuing fall in mortgage rates

Since Malcolm wrote HERE about Berkeley Group (BKG) a few days ago, and the company issued some formal results yesterday, I will him write about his updated thoughts. What interests me more today, is that I see the media observing this morning that "average two-year mortgage rate drops below 6% for first time in six months". Should the average housing sector punter be excited?

How bonkers will the Bank of England be later this week?

There are a number of interesting corporate names reporting here in the UK over the next week, but I am also “looking forward” to Thursday’s upcoming decision from the Bank of England. I say “looking forward”, because I think the BoE has lost the plot about its interest rate policy…

You might use ARM products, but that does not mean you need to love up its IPO

I was not clever enough to be holding a bunch of ARM shares when the company was takeover by Softbank Group of Japan in 2016. You may have been reading over the last few months, the company’s (re)IPO is not going to take place here, or in Japan, but in the US of A. And what a surprise that this is where technology sector demand is the most rampant, and valuations are the most excitable. However…

Aviva shares are so much more attractive than the average bond, but…

Home insurance is very boring…but rather important. I know some people choose not to bother, but I think this is very foolish. Sadly, home insurance is not particularly cheap. My (until recently) supplier had offered a good product at a sensible price, but pushed the proposed cost up over 30% and was not even willing to negotiate. Having asked a Welsh opera singer for a bit of advice (as you do), I found a more sensible deal. And all this waffle about my very boring personal home economics, brings me to the FTSE 100 giant Aviva (AV.)...

Having a think about markets whilst having my now and again coffee at Dunelm

I have become a bit of a fan over the last year or so of Dunelm (DNLM). Sadly - despite my alleged investment knowledge and capability - I failed to buy the shares a year or so ago and hence missed out on an approximately 30% share price rise (and a 3.5% odd dividend yield), but I have at least learnt that the company offers an excellent coffee shop location.

My view remains, if Burberry shares fall back below a twenty quid share price, that would be chavtastic

A big mistake - in my opinion - that many investors make is knowing more and more about less and less. Facts do not exist in a vacuum, and this is why smart investors do a lot of reading, including a bit of macro research, matters in different corporate markets, make an attempt to understand all sectors (just a little bit), and don’t just look at shares they hold (or like). Personally, I am a complete generalist, a bit of a “Jack of all trades, master of none", even in the investment world. However, that is why I like looking at the luxury goods company Burberry (BRBY), despite never being one of its clients.

More headlines for BT Group's long-suffering shareholders to think about

I said a couple of months ago, that I was keeping on holding my BT Group (BT.A) shares, but I am even more officially hacked off with them now. It is nothing to with my monthly home phone, broadband, mobile and related bill, which is pretty cheap given the family (and me) access it just a little bit every day. No, what I am disappointed about is the news that “the FTSE-100 telecoms giant is working with head hunters on a search for a successor to Philip Jansen after he was approached about several US-based roles”...
